Prof. Surya represents Kakani Associates, a practice established with his partner Jaai as a collaborative between architecture and design in 1995 each informing the other and subsequently informing a way of life.

An underlying ethos of the practice has been to achieve efficiency in operation, minimize waste and match form and expression closely to the imperatives of the chosen construction systems and processes, broadly related to sustainability along with the habitual essence of buildings.

Recognizing Surya Kakani’s contribution to architecture practice and continued collaboration with academia, from April 2017 he was appointed as Dean Faculty of Architecture CEPT University, a position he held till June 2020.

The practice was awarded the Micheal Ventris Award 2021 for their work on the timbrel construction.
